How to play would you rather with teens

One person reads, everyone picks a side, and somebody has to defend their answer. For the general rules and the main deck, see the full Would You Rather game.

Teens tune out fast if a game feels like a lesson. Hand the phone to one of them and let the group run it. The adult's only job is to laugh at the right moments.

• Let the reader skip any card they think is boring. A fast game beats a complete one.
• Use the lonely-vote rule: if only one person picks an option, they get 30 seconds to win someone over.
• Try “guess the room.” Before anyone votes, the reader predicts which side wins. A right guess earns a point.
• Match the group to the mood. School life and Food & weekends keep things light. Future gets the deeper answers.

Where it works best

These questions were written to be clean enough for a classroom, a youth group or a team bus, and still interesting to a 16-year-old.

• Sleepovers: play in a circle with the lights low. The friends questions get the best stories.
• Classrooms and advisory periods: put one question on the board as a warm-up and take a quick vote.
• Youth groups and clubs: use it as an icebreaker when half the room doesn't know each other yet.
• Road trips: the Phones & tech group gets surprisingly heated somewhere around hour two.
• Family dinners: the Future group is a gentle way to talk about college and jobs without it feeling like an interview.

Let teens write the next round

After ten questions, ask everyone to write one of their own. The rule is simple: both options have to be equally tempting, or equally painful. Read them out without names and let the group guess who wrote each one. It is usually the quiet kid who writes the best one.
