How to play Imposter
You need 3 to 12 people and one phone. Everyone knows the secret word except the imposter, who has to blend in. Everyone else has to find them without giving the word away.
- 1Pick a category or Mixed. Choose 1 imposter, or 2 if you have 7 or more players.
- 2Pass the phone around. Each player taps to see their card privately, then hands it on.
- 3Everyone gets the same secret word, except the imposter, whose card says “You're the imposter.”
- 4The app picks a random starting player. Going around the circle, each person says one word about the secret word. Go around once or twice.
- 5Discuss, accuse, defend yourself. Then vote on who you think the imposter is.
- 6Tap Reveal to see who the imposter was and what the word was.
- 7If the imposter got caught, they get one guess at the word. Guess it right and they steal the win.
A sample round: the word is “beach.” Clues go around: “sand,” “towel,” “summer.” Then the imposter, who only knows the category is Places, says “crowded.” Not bad. But the next player says “waves,” and suddenly everyone is looking at the person who said “crowded.”
Word categories
The secret word comes from the category you pick, or from all of them with Mixed. Turn on the category hint to give the imposter a fighting chance. Every word is family-friendly.

Imposters, hints and who wins
With 3 to 6 players, one imposter is plenty. From 7 players up you can turn on a second imposter, which makes the vote a lot messier and a lot more fun.
The category hint is optional. When it's on, the imposter sees the category of the secret word, like Food or Sports, instead of nothing at all. Turn it on for new players and kids, and leave it off once your group gets good.
The vote happens out loud, not in the app. An easy way to do it: count to three and everyone points at their suspect at the same time. Most fingers is out. If it's a tie, the tied players each give one more clue and you vote again.
Who wins? If the group votes out the imposter and the imposter can't guess the word, the group wins. If the imposter slips through the vote, or gets caught but names the word, the imposter wins. Tap Play again and the roles reshuffle for the next round.
Tips for both sides
- If you know the word, be specific enough to prove it and vague enough that the imposter can't guess it. If the word is pizza, “cheese” is too easy. “Friday” is better.
- Imposters, listen first. If you're not starting, the earlier clues tell you a lot.
- Imposter going first? Pick something safe and general, like “popular” or “classic.”
- Vague is good, but too vague is suspicious. “Nice” fits any word, which is exactly why it gets imposters caught.
- Don't copy someone else's clue. Repeating is the fastest way to get caught.
- Watch for hesitation. A player who pauses before every clue might be building an answer from scratch.
- Don't vote too fast. A second lap of clues exposes a lot of imposters.
Ways to play
Double trouble
With 7 or more players, turn on two imposters. Accusations fly in every direction.
Hard mode
Turn off the category hint. The imposter has nothing but other people's clues to go on.
Two laps
Go around twice before you vote. More clues means more chances for the imposter to slip up, or bluff their way through.
Family version
Pick Animals or Food and keep the hint on. Kids catch on quickly, and they're often surprisingly good liars.
Where it works best
Imposter shines with five or more people sitting in a circle: parties, sleepovers, campfires, dorm rooms and family gatherings after dinner. It's quiet enough for a restaurant table, since the whole game is talking and side-eye. It's also a solid icebreaker for a new group: nobody needs special knowledge, just a straight face.
Teachers can use it as a quick classroom game. Pick a category that fits the lesson, pass one phone around a small group, and let students practice describing words without saying too much.
A round takes a few minutes, so it's easy to play five in a row. When you need a break from suspecting your friends, ManyMini has other games that run on the same phone.
Questions
Is Imposter free?
Yes. All the categories, the two-imposter option and the category hint are free. The site runs on ads, and there's no sign-up.
How many players do you need?
Between 3 and 12. It's best with 5 or more, and with 7 or more you can add a second imposter.
Does everyone need their own phone?
No. One phone gets passed around so each player can see their card privately. Just make sure nobody peeks over a shoulder.
What does the imposter see?
Their card says “You're the imposter” instead of the word. If the hint is on, they also see the category.
Who goes first?
The app picks a random starting player, and then you go around the circle.
What happens if the imposter gets caught?
They get one guess at the secret word. If they guess right, they steal the win.
Is it OK for kids?
Yes. All the words are family-friendly. Turn on the category hint to make it easier for younger players.
Do I need to download an app?
No. It runs in your phone's browser, so there's nothing to install.
