How to play Name 3 Things
One phone, 2 to 10 players, and the longest five seconds of your life. Everyone plays for themselves, so there are no teams to sort out. Here's how a game goes.
- 1Add the players. Names are optional, but they help in a big group.
- 2Pick a category, or Mixed, and set the target score: 5, 10 or 15.
- 3Hand the phone to the first player. When they're ready, they tap to reveal their “Name 3 …” prompt.
- 4A five-second countdown starts. The player says three answers out loud before the buzzer.
- 5When the buzzer goes, the group decides: Got it if all three counted, Missed if not.
- 6Pass the phone to the next player. The first one to reach the target score wins.
A sample turn: Maya taps and gets “Name 3 things you take to the beach.” “Towel, sunscreen, um, sandwich.” Buzzer. The group agrees a sandwich counts, someone taps Got it, and Maya is one point closer to winning. Then the phone moves on and it's your turn to panic.
Question categories
Every prompt starts with “Name 3.” Pick a category or play Mixed to bounce between all of them. The questions are family-friendly, and the Kids category keeps things easy for younger players.

Judging answers (and settling arguments)
The app keeps time. Your group keeps it honest. After the buzzer, everyone who heard the answers weighs in, and someone taps Got it or Missed.
A few house rules are worth agreeing on before the first turn. Does the third answer count if it lands right on the buzzer? Are brand names fair game? Can you repeat an answer someone gave earlier? Decide now, before someone insists a tomato is a vegetable.
What counts as a real answer? A good rule of thumb: if most of the group nods, it counts. Silly answers are fine as long as they actually fit the prompt. Three versions of the same thing, like red apple, green apple and yellow apple, usually don't.
The target score sets the length of the game. Five points is a quick warm-up, 10 is a solid game night, and 15 is for groups that refuse to go home.
How to beat the buzzer
- Don't hunt for the best answer. Say the first three that pop into your head.
- Go for the obvious. Name 3 fruits? Apple, banana, orange. Done.
- Start talking before you have all three. The third one usually shows up mid-sentence.
- Count on your fingers. It keeps you from stalling at two.
- If you blank on a name, describe it. “The yellow fruit monkeys like” is slower than “banana,” but it beats silence.
- Watchers, stay quiet until the buzzer. Whispering answers is cheating, even if it's your mom doing it.
- Turn on player names in bigger groups so everyone knows whose turn it is.
Ways to play
Family game night
Play the Kids category to 5 points. Short games, easy prompts, and the little ones win plenty.
Party mode
Pick Totally random and set the target to 15. The prompts get strange and the arguments get better.
Two-player duel
Just the two of you, passing one phone back and forth. A game to 10 goes by fast.
Classroom warm-up
Enter team names instead of player names, up to 10, and let each team pick a speaker for every turn.
Where it works best
Name 3 Things needs no space and no setup, which makes it great for places other party games can't go: waiting for food at a restaurant, sitting around a campfire, killing time at the airport gate.
It's a natural road trip game. A passenger can hold the phone and read the prompt out loud for the driver, so the driver's eyes stay on the road while their mouth does the work.
Teachers can use it as a two-minute brain break between lessons, or as a review game with the class split into teams.
At home, it's an easy opener for family game night or a party, since it takes ten seconds to explain. When you want something with more acting or bluffing, ManyMini has other games for the same phone.
Where the five-second game comes from
Naming things under time pressure is a familiar party game idea, best known from the board game 5 Second Rule. Name 3 Things is a separate game and has no connection to that game's owner.
Why five seconds? It's long enough to feel fair and short enough to wipe your mind clean, which is the whole joke. Everyone at the table knows three fruits. Almost nobody can say them on the spot.
Ours is an independent free game with its own prompts. It runs in your browser, keeps score for you and never loses its timer between the couch cushions.
Questions
Is Name 3 Things free?
Yes. All the categories and the scoring are free. The site runs on ads, and you don't need an account.
Is this the same as 5 Second Rule?
No. 5 Second Rule is a separate board game by another company. Name 3 Things is our own free game based on the classic party game of naming things against the clock.
How many players can play?
From 2 to 10, taking turns with one phone. Player names are optional. With a bigger crowd, enter team names instead and let each team choose who answers.
Do I need an app?
No. It runs in your phone's browser, so there's nothing to install.
How does the 5 second game work?
On your turn you tap to reveal a prompt, like “Name 3 things that are yellow.” You have five seconds to say three answers before the buzzer, then the group decides if you got it.
Can I make the game shorter or longer?
Yes. Set the target score to 5, 10 or 15. The first player to reach it wins.
Is it OK for kids?
Yes. The prompts are family-friendly, and there's a Kids category with easier questions.
What if we disagree about an answer?
The group decides with Got it or Missed. Agree on house rules before you start, like whether answers right on the buzzer count.
