How to play Would You Rather

Would You Rather is the easiest party game to start. There's no board, no score and no wrong answer. Someone reads two options, everyone picks one, and then the arguing begins.

The deck is already sitting on this page. There's no start button to find and nothing to set up. Choose a category, or leave it on All, and read the first card.

1. 1Gather everyone around one phone, tablet or laptop. On a video call, share your screen so the whole group can read along.
2. 2Pick a category: Funny, Food, Superpowers, Travel & adventure, Life choices, School & work, Animals, Impossible choices or For kids. All mixes everything together.
3. 3Read both options out loud, slowly. Someone will still ask you to repeat it.
4. 4On three, everyone picks at the same time. Then at least one person explains why. The explanation is the real game.
5. 5Tap Next for a new card. On a phone you can swipe, and on a laptop the arrow keys work. Previous takes you back if the last card deserves a rematch.

Cards are shuffled, and none of them come back until you've gone through the whole deck. With about 300 questions, that takes a good while, so a long game stays fresh.

House rules worth trying

You don't need any rules to play. But groups that add one or two usually laugh more and stall less. Pick the ones that fit your crowd.

• No fence-sitting. “Neither” and “both” are not answers. Pick one and live with it.
• One-sentence defense. Everyone gets a single sentence to explain their pick. Speeches are for weddings.
• The lonely vote. If only one person picks an option, they get 30 seconds to win someone over to their side.
• Rotate the reader. Pass the phone after every card so everybody gets a turn reading.
• Keep score if you like. The game doesn't track points, so use fingers or a scrap of paper. One point every time you change someone's mind.

• Team icebreakers: Life choices and School & work tell you more about coworkers than any intro slide ever will.
• Video calls: share your screen and go around the grid. People can also type their pick in the chat before anyone explains.

How to write a good would you rather question

Sooner or later someone in your group starts inventing questions. That's a good sign. Here's how to make theirs land.

• Balance the two sides. If everyone picks the same option, it isn't a question, it's a poll.
• Keep it short enough to read in one breath. If you need a second breath, cut it down.
• Be specific. “Have a pet dragon the size of a cat” beats “have a weird pet.”
• Give the good option a catch: “Be able to fly, but only three feet off the ground.”
• Make it about real life. Questions about food, phones or mornings hit closer to home than questions about castles.
