How to play Guess the Gibberish
Guess the Gibberish is a sound-it-out word game. Each card shows a few words that make no sense together, like “Spa get tea.” Say them out loud, speed up, and a real word falls out. In this case, spaghetti.
It's the classic gibberish challenge, ready on one phone. The phone deals the cards, runs the timer and keeps score. You bring the voices.
- 1Pick a category: Food, Animals, Everyday things, Places, Sayings & phrases or Holidays & celebrations. Mixed pulls cards from all six.
- 2Set the timer to 15, 30 or 60 seconds, or turn it off.
- 3Choose Solo or 2, 3 or 4 teams, and a game of 10 or 20 cards.
- 4Hold the phone where the team on turn can see it. Read the card out loud together, again and again, a little faster each time.
- 5Shout the answer when it clicks, then tap Reveal to check. If the timer runs out first, the answer shows on its own.
- 6Tap Got it if the team said it before the reveal, or Missed if they didn't. With teams, the next card goes to the next team.
Teams take turns one card at a time until the game is over. Then the scoreboard shows how every team did and who won. In Solo, one player or the whole room plays as a single side, and the score is yours to beat next time.

Tips for reading gibberish out loud
The secret is to stop reading and start listening. Your eyes see separate words. Your ears need to hear one sound. These habits help a stuck team.
- Say it right away. Staring at the card keeps you stuck on the spelling. Read it out loud before you start thinking.
- Speed up every time. The third or fourth fast read is usually when the chunks melt together and the answer pops out.
- Ignore the spaces. They're the biggest trap on the card. Run each chunk into the next one as if it were one long word.
- Let small sounds go soft. “Her” turns into “er,” and “uh” almost disappears. “Pea knot bud her” only works once “bud her” sounds like “budder.”
- Move the beat. If it still sounds like nonsense, stress a different chunk. “Ava cod oh” clicks once the beat lands on “cod.”
- Listen to someone else. Hearing a teammate say it can be easier than saying it yourself, because you aren't looking at the letters.
- Use the category. A card from Places is a place, and a card from Sayings & phrases is something people say.
Keep hints to a minimum. The best part of the game is the moment a whole team hears it at once.
House rules and variations
The game handles the cards, the timer and the score. Everything else is up to your group, so agree on these before the first card.
- Close calls. Decide whether a near miss counts. Most groups accept the right answer with a small slip, like “gummy bear” for “gummy bears.”
- Rotate the first reader. On each team, a different person reads the card first every turn, so the loudest player doesn't solve everything.
- One reader only. Just one teammate looks at the screen and reads the card out loud. Everyone else has to guess by ear, which is harder than it sounds.
- Steal for bragging rights. If a team misses, the other teams get one shout before Reveal. It doesn't change the score, but nobody forgets a good steal.
- Teams by couch. At a big party, let each couch or table be a team. With up to four teams, everyone is back on turn every few cards.
- No timer for new players. Turn the timer off for kids, first-timers or anyone playing in a second language, and tap Reveal when the group gives up.
- Fast finish. Once everyone has the hang of it, switch to 15 seconds. The pressure brings out the strangest guesses.
Ways to play
Same cards, different rooms. Here is how the game fits four common setups.
At a party
Split the room into 2 to 4 teams and play 20 cards with the 30-second timer. Put the phone in the middle so the team on turn can see it, and let everyone else enjoy the struggle.
In a classroom
Put the page on the projector and play Solo with the whole class, or make each row a team. No timer works well with younger readers, and sounding out the chunks is real reading practice. For more ideas, see our classroom games.
On a video call
Share your screen so everyone can see the card. Each team unmutes on its turn and reads the card out loud together. A little lag doesn't matter, because the clue stays on screen until the reveal. More picks are in our video call games.
On a road trip
A passenger holds the phone and reads each card to the car. The driver guesses by ear and never looks at the screen. Turn the timer off so nobody rushes. For the next stretch of highway, try our road trip games.
How to make your own gibberish
Sooner or later someone in your group starts writing their own cards. That's half the fun. Here's a method that works.
- 1Pick a word or phrase everyone knows. Words with three or four syllables give you the most room to play.
- 2Say it slowly and split it by sound, not by spelling. “Basketball” becomes bas, kit, ball.
- 3Swap each sound for a real word or an easy chunk that sounds the same. Bas becomes “bass,” ball becomes “bawl,” and you get “Bass kit bawl.”
- 4Make it look wrong. Don't leave the original words in place. “Basket ball” is just the answer with a space in it.
- 5Read it fast to check it. If it doesn't sound right after three quick tries, swap a chunk.
- 6Test it on one person before the whole group. If they crack it and grin, it's ready.
Write your homemade cards on scraps of paper and read them out between rounds. Holiday words, inside jokes and the names of family pets all make good gibberish.
When to play Guess the Gibberish
Anyone who can read can play, and nobody needs to know any facts. That makes it an easy pick when the ages and the crowd are mixed.
- Game night: a loud warm-up before a longer game. Ten cards take only a few minutes.
- Family gatherings: grandparents and teens start on equal footing, since all it takes is saying things out loud.
- Holiday parties: Holidays & celebrations covers Halloween, Thanksgiving, winter holidays, birthdays and more.
- Team meetings: a five-minute icebreaker that gets the whole call laughing. Sayings & phrases suits a work crowd.
- Waiting for food: play Solo with no timer at the table and hand the phone around.
- Sleepovers and birthday parties: kids and teens love the moment the nonsense turns into a word.
