How to play Get to Know You

Get to Know You is a deck of good conversation questions. There's no score and no winner. Someone reads a question, people answer, and the stories do the rest.

All you need is one phone. It works for friends around a table, a new team in a meeting, two people on a first date, a family in the car or a class with the page on the projector.

  1. 1Pick a category with the chips above the card. Mixed shuffles every category except For kids and For couples, which you pick on their own.
  2. 2Read the question out loud. The card says “Everyone answers,” so go around the group one by one.
  3. 3In a bigger group, try the hand-off instead. One person answers, then picks who gets the next question.
  4. 4When everyone has had a turn, tap Next or swipe. The counter shows where you are, like “3 of 40.”
  5. 5Stop whenever a conversation takes over. That's the game working.

On a video call, share your screen and call on people in the order they appear. Our video call games have more ideas for remote groups.

Each category has 40 questions, so even a long evening won't run dry. If a question doesn't land with your group, skip it. Nobody's keeping track.

All get to know you questions

Every question in the game, sorted by category. Read them here if you want to plan ahead, or pick a handful for a meeting, a dinner or a long drive.

House rules for a good conversation

You can play without any rules. But a few simple ones keep things moving and help everyone feel at ease. Agree on them before the first card.

  • Anyone can pass. Say “pass” and the question moves on, no reason needed. A good question is an invitation, not a test.
  • Everyone answers, or one answers. Small groups can go all the way around. With more than six people, let one person answer and hand the question to someone new, or a single card takes forever.
  • One follow-up. After each answer, one person may ask a single follow-up question. It's the easiest way to turn a short answer into a story.
  • Keep it short. In a big group or a quick meeting, give each answer about a minute. If someone in your group loves a long story, the reader can gently call time.
  • The reader goes last. Whoever reads the card answers after everyone else, so nobody is put on the spot first.
  • Pass the phone. Hand it to the next person after every card, so everyone gets a turn reading.

Ways to play

Same deck, different settings. Here's how to use it in the places people most often need a good question.

New team meeting

Open with one card from Work icebreakers and give everyone a minute. One question per meeting is plenty. For something quicker, our would you rather questions for work only ask people to pick a side.

First date

Start with Light & fun, then try a few from Deeper once the conversation warms up. Take turns reading, and either of you can pass. For more ideas, see our games for two.

Family dinner

Put the phone in the middle of the table and let a different person read each card. Memories gets grandparents talking, and For kids keeps the youngest players in the game.

Classroom

Put the page on the projector and use For kids or Light & fun as a warm-up. Pair students up to answer each other, then ask a few volunteers to share their partner's answer.

Road trip

A passenger reads and the whole car answers. The What if and Memories categories can fill an hour of highway, and the driver never has to look at a screen.

Good follow-up questions, and how to keep it comfortable

The first answer is usually short. The follow-up is where you actually get to know someone. Keep a few of these ready:

  • What happened next?
  • How old were you?
  • Who was with you?
  • Would you do it again?
  • What made you pick that one?
  • What's the story behind that?

Every card in the deck is written to be easy to answer in a group, but only your group knows its own limits. Let people answer at whatever depth they like. A funny answer to a deep question still counts.

Don't push when someone keeps it short, and don't repeat anyone's answer outside the room. With coworkers or people you just met, stay with Light & fun, What if and Work icebreakers until the group asks for more.

Which category to use when

Every category has 40 questions. Here's where each one fits best.

  • Light & fun: easy openers about food, habits and small joys. Safe with anyone, even people you met five minutes ago.
  • Deeper: thoughtful, never heavy. Values, proud moments and what you'd tell your younger self. Best once people feel relaxed.
  • What if: made-up situations, so nobody has to share anything personal. Good for groups that are still warming up.
  • Memories: childhood, trips and first times. Great for families and old friends who think they've heard every story.
  • Work icebreakers: right for any team, in person or remote. Nothing about pay, health, family plans or anything else that belongs outside a meeting.
  • Friends: questions about friendship itself. Best with people who already know each other a little.
  • For couples: sweet, clean questions for date nights, anniversaries and long drives for two. It stays out of Mixed, so pick it when it's just the two of you.
  • For kids: simple questions for ages 5 to 12. Younger kids may need a grown-up to read the card. It stays out of Mixed, so pick it on purpose.

If your group wants faster answers, try This or That, where every question has just two options. For more ways to warm up a room, browse our icebreaker games.

How to write your own get to know you questions

Once the deck gets going, someone always starts inventing questions. That's a good sign. Here's what makes theirs work.

  • Ask for a story, not a fact. “What's the best meal you've had on a trip?” beats “What's your favorite food?”
  • Be specific. A time, a place or a small detail gives people somewhere to start.
  • Keep it open. If the answer could be yes or no, add “and why?” or “what happened?”
  • Make it easy to answer in front of others. If you'd hesitate to answer it yourself with this group, leave it out.
  • Mix light and deep. Two easy questions, then one that takes a moment of thought.

When the group wants a change of pace, switch to Would You Rather, Never Have I Ever or Most Likely To. They all run on one phone, with no app and no sign-up.

Questions

Is this game free? Do I need an app?

It's free and runs in your browser on any phone, tablet or laptop. There's nothing to download and no account to create. The site is supported by ads.

What are good questions to get to know someone?

Questions that ask for a story rather than a fact. “What place feels like home to you?” gets a better answer than “Where are you from?” Start light, then go a little deeper once people relax.

What are good icebreaker questions for work?

Pick the Work icebreakers category. The questions cover past jobs, habits and how people like to work, and none of them touch pay, health, family plans, religion or politics.

What are some deep questions to ask?

Try the Deeper category. The questions are thoughtful without being heavy, like a risk you're glad you took or a question you wish people asked you more often.

How many people can play?

Two is enough, and it works with a whole class. With more than six people, let one person answer each card and hand the next one to someone else.

What if someone doesn't want to answer?

They say “pass” and the question moves on. Agree on that before you start, so nobody ever has to explain.

Can we play on a video call?

Yes. Share your screen, read the card out loud and call on people one at a time. Quieter players can type their answer in the chat.

Are the questions OK for kids?

Every question is clean and family-friendly. The For kids category is written for ages 5 to 12, with short words and ideas that are easy to picture. Teens do well with Light & fun, What if and Friends.
