What's in the Get to Know You deck

The deck has 200 open questions in five categories of 40. Each card says “Get to know you” at the top, with one question below. There are no right answers and no scores, just questions that get people talking. The full deck takes 25 pages, and each category fills exactly 5. The questions come from our Get to Know You game.

Light & fun

Easy openers about food, hobbies and weekends. What does your ideal Saturday morning look like, from the moment you wake up?

What if

Imaginary choices that are fun to explain. If you opened a small shop or café, what would it sell and what would you call it?

Memories

Childhood, trips and first times. What was your favorite thing to do on summer break as a kid?

Work icebreakers

For new teams and meetings. What's a tool, trick or shortcut that saves you time every single day?

Friends

For groups who already know each other a little. What's a tradition you have with a friend or a group of friends?

How to use the cards with a group

  1. 1Shuffle the cards and put the stack face down in the middle.
  2. 2The first player draws a card, reads it out loud and answers it.
  3. 3Go around the group so everyone answers the same card, or let the next player draw a new one.
  4. 4Anyone can ask one follow-up question. That's often where the best stories come out.
  5. 5Anyone can pass on a card and draw another, with no explaining needed.

There's no score and no winner. In a big group, split into tables of four to six so everyone gets a turn to talk.

Printing and hosting tips

  • Print on cardstock. The cards get passed around a lot.
  • Cut along the dashed lines with a paper cutter or scissors. One page makes 8 cards.
  • Laminate a set for a classroom or a meeting room, so it lasts all year.
  • Try talking chips: give everyone three pieces of wrapped candy or bingo chips. Players put one in the middle each time they answer, so everyone gets a turn and nobody talks the whole time.
  • Start with Light & fun. Move to Memories or What if once people are comfortable.

Ways to use the cards

First day of class

Give each student one card. They find a partner, ask each other their questions, then swap cards and find a new partner.

New team meeting

Open the first few meetings with one card from Work icebreakers. Everyone answers in a sentence or two.

Family reunion

Put a small stack on each table. Memories cards get cousins, aunts and grandparents swapping stories.

Dinner table

Set one card at each place setting. Between courses, each person reads theirs out loud and answers it.

One card a day

Read one card each morning at the start of class or a standup, and let a few people answer.

Mixer first

Start with Find Someone Who bingo so people get up and mingle. Then sit down in small groups with the cards.

For classrooms, new teams and family gatherings

Every question is clean, and people can answer at whatever depth they like. That makes the deck a good fit for the first week of school, a new team, a club, a family reunion or a dinner with friends.

Work icebreakers is written for coworkers. Friends works best when people already know each other a little. Light & fun, What if and Memories fit almost any group. For more ideas, see our icebreaker games and classroom games pages.

200 cards in five categories of 40. They print 8 to a page, so the full deck takes 25 pages and each category takes exactly 5.

Can I print just one category?

Yes. Turn categories on or off above the preview before you print. Work icebreakers on its own makes a 40-card deck for a new team.

Can I use these as conversation starter cards?
