How to play at a Christmas party

Read a question, everyone picks, and at least one person has to defend their answer. For the full rules and the year-round deck, open the full Would You Rather game. These Christmas questions are made for the moments in between: while the cookies bake, after presents, or when the party needs a nudge.

  • Put the phone on the coffee table and pass it after each question, so everyone gets a turn as reader.
  • Start with Gifts or Cookies & treats. Everyone has an opinion on wrapping paper and gingerbread.
  • At a bigger party, ask people to move to one side of the room or the other. The smaller side explains first.
  • Keep a sweater rule: whoever is wearing the ugliest sweater picks the next group.

For kids and classrooms

Every question here is family-friendly and secular, so it works for a class party before winter break as well as a family gathering. Kids especially love the Santa & elves and Winter & snow groups.

In a classroom, put the page on the projector, read one question and take a quick vote with a show of hands. Then ask kids to write two sentences about their choice. It makes a calm activity for the last afternoon before break.

Family spread across the country? Start a video call, share your screen and have everyone hold up one finger or two to vote. Grandparents get to hear the kids explain why they would rather be a reindeer, which might be the best gift of the day.

More games for the holidays

When the group is warmed up, switch to something with more movement. Our Christmas games include charades and Forehead Guess with holiday words. And if you are planning ahead for November, try the Thanksgiving would you rather questions too.

Questions

Are these Christmas would you rather questions good for kids?

Yes. They are family-friendly and use simple words, so kids around six and up can read or answer them. Santa & elves and Winter & snow are the easiest to start with.

Can I use these at a work holiday party?

Yes. Nothing here is personal or awkward. Gifts, Holiday fun and Cookies & treats make good icebreakers for coworkers.

Are the questions religious?

No. They focus on the secular side of the season: gifts, Santa, snow, cookies, lights, movies and family traditions.

How many people can play?

Two is enough, but it is more fun with a group. For a big party, vote with a show of hands or by moving to one side of the room.

Can I play just the Christmas questions in the game?

Yes. Use the player at the top of this page, or pick the Christmas deck in the full Would You Rather game.
