How to play would you rather with kids

Read a question, everyone picks a side, and each kid says why. That is the whole game. For house rules and the full deck, open the full Would You Rather game.

With younger players, the "why" matters more than the pick. A five-year-old who explains that a snail is slow but at least it won't bounce you off is practicing a real argument. Give them time.

• Read slowly and say both options twice. Little kids forget the first one by the time you finish the second.
• Let early readers hold the phone and read. Every question here uses short, everyday words.
• Ask one follow-up: "What would you do first?" It turns a ten-second answer into a story.
• Allow acting it out. Kids who chose the bouncy kangaroo will want to show you the ride.
• Stop while they still want more. Fifteen questions is plenty for kids under seven.

Tips for a classroom

Would you rather makes a good five-minute morning meeting or a brain break between lessons. Put the page on the projector so the class can read along.

• Make it a moving game. Point to one wall for the first option and the other wall for the second. Kids walk to their side, then two volunteers explain.
• Use thumbs for a quiet room: thumbs up for the first option, thumbs down for the second.
• Turn it into writing. Pick one question and ask for three sentences that start with "I would rather… because…".
• Choose the School group for the first week back and the Animals group before a zoo trip.

Let kids write their own questions

After a few rounds, kids start inventing questions on their own. Let them. Ask for two things that are both fun, or both a little gross, so nobody picks the same side every time. Read the best ones at dinner or save them for your next family game night.
