How to play at a holiday party

It works just like the classic Never Have I Ever game: everyone holds up ten fingers and puts one down for each card they've done. These cards are also in the full game as the Christmas deck. The holidays add a few ideas of their own.

  • Let the youngest reader start. Kids love being in charge of the phone.
  • Play after dinner, when everyone is too full to move but still in the mood to talk.
  • Start with Gifts & wrapping or Cookies & treats, which pull in the whole table, then move to Family traditions once the stories start.
  • Give a small prize. The last player with a finger up gets first pick from the dessert tray.
  • Pair the generations. Ask a grandparent and a grandkid to answer the same card. Hearing how the holidays used to go is half the fun.

Playing with kids who still believe

Every card on this page is safe to read with little ones at the table. None of them give away any holiday secrets, so the magic stays right where it is.

If an older cousin starts a story that could spoil things, a cheerful “Tell me later” does the trick. Then tap Next and keep going.

For the youngest players, stick to Santa, Snow & winter and Cookies & treats. Those cards are short and easy to picture.

Playing with family far away

Not everyone makes it home for the holidays. This list works on a video call: share your screen, read each card out loud and have everyone hold a hand up to the camera. Grandparents in another state can play right along with the kids on the couch.

When the group is ready to get up and move, our Christmas games page has more one-phone games for the season, and family game night has ideas for the long evenings between the holidays.

More Never Have I Ever questions

Questions

Are these Christmas questions OK for kids?

Yes. They're clean and safe to read with kids who still believe in Santa. There's nothing 18+ and no drinking.

Do you have to celebrate Christmas to play?

No. Plenty of cards are about winter, snow, food, travel and family time, so anyone at a holiday gathering can play along.

How many people can play?

Three or more. It works for a family of four or a holiday party of 30, since everyone answers at the same time.

How long does a game take?

About 15 to 30 minutes with ten fingers each. Start with five fingers for a quick round between dinner and dessert.

Does everyone need a phone?

No. One phone is enough. One person reads the cards, and everyone else plays with their fingers.
