How to play truth or dare over text
One person opens this page and acts as the host. Everyone else only needs the group chat.
- 1Agree on the order of turns, like alphabetical by first name.
- 2On their turn, each player types “truth” or “dare” in the chat.
- 3The host taps Truth or Dare on this page and copies the card into the chat.
- 4The player answers or does the dare right there in the chat, and the next person goes.
- 5Set a time limit, like five minutes per turn, so the game keeps moving.
It's the same game as Truth or Dare, just slower, so it fits around homework, dinner or a long bus ride.
Rules for a safe group chat game
A chat game leaves a record, so a few rules matter more than they do in person.
- Everything stays in this chat. No dare ever means messaging someone outside the group.
- Nothing from the game gets shared publicly or forwarded.
- Photo dares show objects, pets or drawings. No photos of other people.
- Selfies are always optional. A drawing counts instead.
- Two passes each. A pass is just the word “pass,” with no reason needed.
- If someone asks for a message or a photo to be deleted, delete it.
Playing on a video call
On a call, the host can share their screen so everyone sees the card at the same time. Photo dares become hold-it-up-to-the-camera dares, and voice note dares can be done live. The Long distance group was written with calls in mind.
You can also mix the two, with some people on camera and others typing from wherever they are. Keep the host in charge of whose turn it is, and send the turn order at the start of the game so nobody gets skipped.
For more games that work through a screen, see our video call games.

Questions
How do you play truth or dare over text?
One person opens this page, taps Truth or Dare for the player and pastes the card into the group chat. The player answers or does the dare in the chat, and the turn passes to the next person.
Can just two people play over text?
Yes. Take turns being the host, so you each draw the other's card. Two-player games tend to be quicker, so try a five-minute limit per turn.
Are the dares safe to do over text?
Yes. No dare asks you to message anyone outside the chat, share anything publicly or send a photo of another person. Selfies are always optional.
Does everyone need to open the website?
No. Only the host needs it. Everyone else plays from the chat they already have.
What if someone takes forever to answer?
Agree on a time limit before you start. When it runs out, the turn counts as a pass and the game moves on.
