How to play Valentine's Day bingo

Valentine's Day bingo is regular bingo with Valentine's words in place of numbers. Each player gets a different 5x5 card with a FREE square in the middle. A caller reads out one word at a time, and players mark it if it's on their card. The first player with five marked squares in a row, across, down or corner to corner, calls "Bingo!" and wins the round.

  1. 1Give each player a card and something to mark squares with.
  2. 2Everyone marks the FREE square in the center.
  3. 3The caller draws a word, reads it out loud and sets it aside.
  4. 4Anyone who has that word on their card marks it.
  5. 5The first player with five in a row calls "Bingo!" and reads the row back.
  6. 6The caller checks those words against the ones already called. If they all match, that player wins the round.

Hand out a small prize after each round, like a heart sticker or a pencil, then clear the cards and play again.

What's on the cards

The cards use 60 Valentine's Day words. There are class party favorites (Valentine Box, Card Swap, Doily, Heart Stickers), treats (Candy Hearts, Pink Frosting, Cake Pop, Cinnamon Hearts), classic symbols (Cupid, Cupid's Arrow, Red Rose, Teddy Bear) and friendship (Best Friend, Kind Note, Compliment, High Five).

Nothing on the list is romantic beyond the classic symbols, so the cards are fine for a school party. Each card picks 24 of the 60 words and mixes them in a random order, so no two cards in your set match.

Add your own title, such as "Room 9 Valentine's Bingo" or "Galentine's Bingo", and it prints on every card. Choose 1 big card per page or 2 smaller cards per page. Both fit US Letter paper.

Call it from paper or from one phone

You don't need a bingo cage. Pick whichever way suits your group.

Caller slips

Check "Add caller slips" and every word prints as a slip. Cut them apart, put them in an empty Valentine box and draw one at a time.

Call on this phone

Tap Next and the phone shows a random word to read out. It keeps the list of words already called, so you can check a winning card right on the screen.

Tips for printing and playing

  • Print on pink or red cardstock for a party look. Cardstock also holds up better through several rounds.
  • Laminate the cards, or slide them into sheet protectors, and use dry-erase markers. Wipe them clean for the next class.
  • Use candy hearts, red cinnamon candies or heart-shaped erasers as markers.
  • Choose 1 card per page for big, easy-to-read squares, or 2 per page to save paper and ink.
  • Make one card for every player, plus a few spares for helpers and late arrivals.
  • Tuck a card into each student's Valentine box so the game is waiting when the party starts.

Valentine's Day bingo variations

Once everyone knows the game, change what counts as a win.

Four corners

Mark the four corner squares to win. Rounds are quick, so it makes a good warm-up.

Blackout

Mark every square on the card. Save it for the last round or the best prize.

Heart shape

Mark squares that make a heart: two bumps on top and a point at the bottom. Draw the pattern on the board so everyone knows which squares count.

Kind words bingo

Before claiming the prize, the winner says one kind thing about the player next to them.

Letter X

Mark both diagonals. The FREE square counts for both lines.

Team cards

Pairs share one card. At a Galentine's brunch, pair up guests who don't know each other yet.

Who Valentine's Day bingo is for

Valentine's Day bingo is an easy pick for a class party, because players only need to listen and mark a square, and it fills the time after cards are handed out. You can print up to 60 different cards, enough for a full class or a whole grade. At a Galentine's brunch or a get-together with friends, it gives the group something to do between snacks. Families can play it after a heart-shaped pizza dinner.
